Who are we?
Who Are We?
"And the disciples were called Christians first at Antioch." (Acts 11:26)
Followers of Jesus Christ continue to be called "Christians" wherever they meet. Here at North 2nd Street we are just that... "Christians." We are not associated with any denomination and thus, do not wear any denominational name or title.
The word "church" in our Bible comes from the Greek word "ekklesia," which means "an assembly of believers." Depending on its usage, it can refer to a local assembly or congregation of believers, or it can refer to the church in a general sense - ALL Christians throughout the world. A "church of Christ" (Romans 16:16) is simply an assembly of believers that belong to Christ. It is not a name or title, it is a simple description of who we are. We are happy to claim being nothing more than followers of the Lord Jesus.
The common usage is to refer to a "church" as the physical structure where believers meet. It is not. The "church" is instead a spiritual structure (or temple) made up of Christians... living stones (1 Peter 2:5). The church - or believers - make up the body of Christ (1 Cor 12:27). There is only ONE body of Christ (Eph 4:4-6). We should all strive to become a part of that ONE body and regularly assemble to praise God, worship Him, and study from His Holy Word.
Many congregations of believers subscribe to some form of creed, doctrine, or tradition that is man-made. Sure, parts of these creeds and doctrines have some basis in Scriptures, but someone once wisely said:
"If a creed says more than the Bible, it says too much. If it says less than the Bible, it doesn't say enough. If it says exactly the same thing as the Bible, it is not necessary." ~ Author Unknown
Our sincere desire is to follow Jesus Christ and His inspired Word. If it is your desire to do the same, we invite you to join us in worship, praise, study, and fellowship.
Based on our understanding of the scriptures, before Jesus Christ came to the earth, mankind was contaminated by a deadly spiritual poison called sin. But Jesus heroically stepped in right in the nick of time and saved mankind from spiritual destruction. He died on the cross, to free us from our sins. What a great price the Lord was willing to pay!
For the Bible reveals "He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed" (1 Pet. 2:24).
My friends, the cross, or the death of Jesus Christ, is the most significant event that this world has ever witnessed. It is the magna charta of Christianity. It is the central theme of the Bible.
It was the Christ of the cross who has called us to follow Him instead of man. Let us lay down the false teachings of men and fall down at the feet of the master teacher to learn of God's will for us. Let us learn to love and serve the one who died for us.
